"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” CS Lewis.

Up Close and Personal with Volcano Chaiten

Take a ride in a twin-engined light plane to get a close-up view of Volcano Chaiten erupting in southern Chile. Risky flight, awesome sight. Chaiten began erupting May 2, 2008, after 9000 years of dormancy. Eruptions gathered strength through May 5. Mass evacuations have been ordered in this remote coastal area of Chile.

The ash plume can be seen in this satellite view May 3, 2008, stretching eastward from Chaiten, across Patagonia in Argentina.

A Youtube and Google search will bring up many more videos and stories about this latest eruption.
